This lovely example of an Aller Vale bowl (circa. 1890 and 1910) with a beautiful colour and grace...  A beautiful example of British craft pottery created in Devon for the Edwardian visitors to the area.

The grace translates to: "Some have food but cannot eat (due to sickness or lack of appetite), and some would eat but lack food. But we have food and we can eat, so let the Lord be thanked."

That beautiful inscription is the famous "Selkirk Grace", a traditional Scottish blessing. While it was anciently known as the Galloway Grace or Covenanter's Grace, it was immortalised and popularised by the legendary poet Robert Burns in 1794.  It remains the mandatory pre-meal recital at standard Burns Night Suppers every 25th of January.

Dimensions: height 7cm, diameter 20cm.  Red clay, glaze crazed in keeping with age and some wear.  See images which form part of description.
