This handsome and generously sized Portmeirion jug has a gloss white glaze, rather than a matt, biscuit like surface and carries an embossed mark on the base.

Its history - This jug was first designed and produced in 1866 to commemorate the opening of the first transatlantic telegraph cable, linking the UK to the USA, and antique pieces are rare. The jug bears the cable motif, a British and American flag either side of the spout and the base shows telegraph tape bearing the message that was first transmitted.  In this world of WiFi and satellites, this is a fab conversation piece!

Ceramics designer, Susan Williams-Ellis, first reproduced the jug back in the sixties, but decided to resurrect the item again in 1977.

Dimensions: height 27cm, diameter at rim 13.5cm, total width 22cm. Maker's mark on base.  One small shallow chip on the inside of the spout - see images which form part of the description.
